Mindset Medicine Review: Your Ultimate Path to Unconditional Self-Love

There is a power in journaling that we can all tap into if given the time, energy, and attention. Journaling is more than recapping the day’s events. It can be far greater than anything you’ve imagined. It’s a space for you to be authentically you. More importantly, it’s a space you can learn to love yourself unconditionally.

That’s the motivator behind Mindset Medicine, the third book from award-winning and international bestseller, Mari L. McCarthy. A revolutionary in the journaling community, McCarthy teaches you how to make journaling the only source of self-care you’ll never need.

In the opening pages, McCarthy states, “Make no doubt about it, your heart and soul are under siege by societal forces that don’t have your best interests in mind.” This could be anything from the media, the endless notifications coming from your phone, and the overall fear that seems to cloud the 24-hour news cycle.

How can you possibly learn to heal and love when all of this is screaming at you from screens?

McCarthy’s solution? Expressive journaling.

One BIG thing you can do when you tap into the unlimited power of self-love is to use it as the centerpiece for defining or redefining your life purpose.

What is expressive journaling?

Expressive journaling — in fact, journaling in general — is a “powerful tool that helps you realize what you really want and need in your life.” In Mindset Medicine, McCarthy challenges you in several areas of your life to really dig deep and discover what it is you want and need. She also makes it clear that wanting is not a bad thing.

McCarthy dives deeper into expressive journaling in her other two books, Journaling Power and Heal Yourself with Journaling Power. In this third book, she’s asking you to go on a personal journey with her. To sit down with your thoughts and burrow beneath the surface. By the end, she promises, you’ll be showered in self-love and thus be able to make better decisions and become the person you were always meant to be.

McCarthy herself knows how powerful expressive journaling can be. After being diagnosed with MLS in 1998, she went the traditional route of using medication to heal herself. But after some time, she didn’t feel any improvement and instead “made the decision to take control of my health.” She implemented action and started journaling, teaching herself to write with her left hand as her right, dominant one was affected by her MLS.

The results, she said, were amazing. She saw improvement. She felt healthier. Stronger. Journaling did what all that medication could not. “I understood that somewhere within me was a hidden ability to heal myself.”

This is what Mindset Medicine is all about. Through McCarthy’s own experience and knowledge, she wants to help you heal the wound — whether physical or emotional — so you can live a more fulfilling life.

Holistic practitioners and doctors who practice functional medicine are in wide agreement that your thoughts and state of mind have a direct effect on every cell in your body and thus, your overall health.

Journaling Power Prompts

At the end of each chapter, McCarthy includes a Journaling Power Prompt. These include questions that cover what she goes over in the accompanying chapter. They’re intended to get you to dig further than just your surface thoughts and really find the gooey center.

Some of these power prompts focus on:

  • Manipulation

  • Effective action

  • Positive self-talk

  • Boundaries

  • Worthiness

  • And more

These prompts help you gain a better understanding of yourself. You’ll learn who is really on your side and who is simply leading you towards a path of societal acceptance. You’ll discover your unique purpose and the type of impact you can make with it. And you’ll uncover new things to love about yourself and not be ashamed or hide it away.

What I loved most about Mindset Medicine was the overall message and importance of YOU. Even McCarthy writes that “the most powerful form of mindset medicine—-unconditional self-love.”

We’re taught to believe that being selfish is wrong. We shouldn’t always be thinking about ourselves. Note the key word there: always. Sometimes, we need to be selfish. You know the saying, “You can’t hope to take care of others unless you take care of yourself first.”

McCarthy believes this and shouts it from the pages of her book. “Loving yourself is the healthiest thing you can do,” she writes.

You will always be YOU and you will always be with YOU, so commit from the bottom of your heart to love yourself without conditions and to make your forever with YOU a fantastic experience!

There’s only one person you spend your entire life with and that’s YOU. There’s no breaking up with you or leaving you to go off and find your own adventure. You are stuck with you for life. So why not love yourself unconditionally and make the journey a memorable one?

The journaling power prompts throughout this book teach you how to do just that. They help you become more in tune with your wants, needs, and desires. As McCarthy says, “an authentic sense of self-love connects you to every aspect of your heart and soul so you can identify your innermost needs and attend to them with care.”

Why deny yourself the chance to truly know you?

Journaling is one of the best practices you can do to learn more about yourself. It’s the ultimate safe space to be your most authentic self. And the best part is you can journal however you see fit. Even McCarthy urges you to journal the way that works for you. Expressive journaling is simply one way to get started.

Tell yourself your natural state is one in which you feel great. Go ahead and put a big grin on your face and think of something that makes you feel good. Being in a joyous state of embracing good thoughts releases all resistance and makes it so much easier for joy, laughter, and fun to flow through your life.

Don’t let the pressure of societal acceptance hold you back from your true potential. Do the journaling prompts and uncover your hidden purpose and, more importantly, learn to love yourself unconditionally. You’ll thank yourself for it later.
